Top 10 Sequels BETTER than the Originals

Franchises! That’s all we have these days. Everything’s gotta be a franchise. A cinematic universe, a silver screen multiverse, an endlessly exploitable IP that can be milked dry for a decade, left on the shelf for six months, then rebooted to make way for another ten years of cash cows with brand recognition.

It’s easy to be cynical about sequels, is what we’re saying. But that’s a shame, because while the history of Hollywood is littered with shameless cash grabs that took a great movie and turned it into a cheap, soulless trash fire with zero artistic, thematic or creative flair … you also get the occasional sequel that is, well, not that. We’re talking about those movies that take the original and build on them, creating something new and special, transcending the first installment and driving the story, characters, themes and ideas into exciting, fresh, astounding places.

Why just last year we got Top Gun: Maverick, a legacy sequel that somehow managed to take everything good about the original and build on it, while jettisoning everything that aged badly.

So yeah, sure, it’s easy to roll your eyes at the state of this era of movies. But let’s celebrate the sequels that did something good. The Part 2s that tried. The series that were motivated by more than just money.

OK, obviously they’re all motivated by money to a certain extent. But, you know. Nobody’s perfect.
