There have been three love notes to cinema gracing theaters in what’s known as ‘Awards Season’, that heady period where studios try to release prestige movies to scoop up those precious awards. Empire of Light depicts movies from the exhibitor end of things, centering around a small beach town’s cinema. The Fablemans creates a fictional take on the path one Steven Spielberg took to becoming one of the biggest directors of all time. Damion Chazelle, in his own immutable style, has taken aim at cinema’s early wild west days and the legendary wild parties and lifestyles that went with them and how the arrival of talking movies took its toll on the people involved. All three of these love letters revolve around how the creation and display of art, the telling of stories, has the potential-perhaps requirement-to destroy the artist in the process. This is especially true of Babylon whose characters are left holding the bag so to speak when the music stopped as talkies took movies mainstream and the Hayes Code imposed a veneer of decency on the industry. Based on real larger than life figures like John Gilbert, Clara Bow, and Anna May Wong the movie that is perhaps the wildest of the trio might be the most grounded in what happened. Mostly. This is only a short list of things that inspired Babylon or are referred to in the movie. What detail did you see? Was that a painting they were recreating when Nellie joins the party in the beginning? I feel like I’ve seen that but I couldn’t find it.
